Past
Early Years; Inez
The second child to Natalia Santin and Moises Maritza, Opal was a surprise to the Aetherain couple, who never anticipated having another child. As her parents worked long hours far off in the city, Opal hardly got the chance to see them as a kid. Though when she did, they mostly just nitpicked things about her or demanded things of her, only caring when she was able to do favors for them. She quickly learned to avoid them, only appeasing them when it meant keeping their anger at bay.
The only real connection she had at home was that with her older sister Inez, whom she considered more of a parental figure than anyone else in her life. Most of her fonder memories were the impromptu camping trips Inez would take her on in Valverde, studying the local flora for her college assignments. The change of pace outside that stuffy house was freeing, and Opal found an appreciation for traveling and the outdoors as a result.
Adolescence; Dreams
Outside of family, lots of Opal's dreams growing up revolved around the stories she read and wrote at a young age. She often drowned herself in books and stories, leading her to have unrealistic expectations especially on herself- striving to be anything her parents weren't. Because of this she yearned for more connections with others; ones where she wasn't depending on someone but she was being depended on instead.
This led to many friendships and a few romances where she offered the world and more to her peers. She was the life of the party, a shoulder to cry on, the perfect friend and partner. Despite believing he was being true to himself in front of others, he really only presented the sides of himself people cared about, sides they wanted to see. She was quick to latch on to whoever showed her any sort of appreciation, but hardly could keep any of these relationships for long.
Early Adulthood; Quiet Home
At some point along the way, Inez had left home to finally live on her own. Opal was thrilled Inez was able to leave the house, yet the crushing loneliness that followed soon after was something Opal struggled to handle. After a few months passed she quickly came to realize how much she was dependent on her. Though they often kept in touch, Opal couldn't stand being at home more than ever now with Inez gone. The atmosphere was dismal and being alone with her thoughts at home now made her realize how little she had going for her. She immersed herself in her writing and her social life more than ever yet the empty house at the end of the day never failed to sour her mood.
Eventually Opal thought about taking another trip to Valverde, on her own this time. She wanted the fresh air and figured she'd get more inspiration for writing if she left home for a bit. She did chat about it to Inez just to ask for advice, who was thrilled at the idea. With her help, Opal was able to map out a vacation of sorts, and was even offered by one of Inez' friends in Valverde to be hosted for a bit. She didn't really care what her parents thought, leaving them a little note and deciding to make for Valverde whether they cared or not. She was going on this trip regardless, happy to have something to look forward to and be excited about in her life again. With the newfound freedom, Opal left for Valverde with a skip in her step, completely unaware of what story was about to unfold right before her eyes.
